MEDIA RELEASE KIRIBATI
07 December 2022
The Judiciary of Kiribati and the Pacific Justice Sector Programme (PJSP) completed two weeks of Efficiency, Court Performance and Information Technology Communications and Court Customer Service activities in South Tarawa on 7th December, 2022. During these weeks the judiciary and court personnel of the High Court and Magistrates Court of South Tarawa and Island Court Clerks from twelve outer islands participated in workshops facilitated by Ms. Jennifer Akers, PJSP Judicial Administration Adviser and Mr Tony Lansdell, PJSP Information Technology Adviser.
The workshops focused on systems and processes that support transparency of court performance to assure citizens have access to fair and timely justice, and quality court service.
With input of participants, the courts have reviewed court efficiency and developed a continuous improvement plan. This includes use of technology for remote court hearings for outer island courts. The court is also looking into the implementation of an improved case tracking system for all court locations.
The workshops are one of many delivered within the Pacific by Te Kura Kaiwhakawā (The Institute of Judicial Studies, New Zealand) PJSP.
The initiative is funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which has promoted the rule of law across the Pacific over recent years through education, tools and support for courts and those who work in them.
